SCROLL DOWN

Low Down & Derby

Title sequence

The much lauded Cornish roller derby documentary Low Down & Derby: The Documentary (which you can follow here and check out the official website for here) was brought to completion under the direction of virtuoso film maker Jennifer Rollason. My role has been to complete a title sequence that is both informative and spectacular, this is the result.

A lot of work went into creating the skate worn by each of the skaters and it was the thing I completed first

Designing and creating the skate was a lot of fun and I've detailed that process pretty thoroughly in this blog post.

The blockthrough, layout, animation, modelling, texturing, lighting, and compositing of the title sequence is explained here in probably one of the longest posts I've ever written, it goes through the more interesting techniques I used throughout the duration of the project including but not limited to:

  • Creating geometry from curves
  • Using IES profiles for light falloff
  • Using advanced Mental Ray environmental lighting features
  • Compositing a huge crowd in 2.5D using After Effects

Below is the original promo I did in 2012 which I stole parts of the track from for the title sequence, but almost everything else had to be built from scratch.
